Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered: menopause, hormones & women’s health

At Jaya Life, we know that menopause, hormonal changes, and women’s health concerns can feel confusing, overwhelming, or even isolating. Our frequently asked questions page is here to provide clear, evidence-based answers and guidance, helping you understand your symptoms, explore your options, and take control of your long-term health.

Whether you’re just starting to notice changes or have been experiencing symptoms for some time, our goal is to give you the knowledge and support you need to make informed decisions about your care.

  • Menopause marks the end of your monthly periods, which happens when your ovaries stop releasing eggs. The average age in the UK is around 51. It’s preceded by the perimenopause, a phase when hormone levels shift and menstrual cycles may change.

At Jaya Life we understand this is a change that can affect your energy, sleep, mood, bones, heart and long‑term health. We help you navigate not just the symptoms, but the journey ahead.

  • There are 34 symptoms, possibly many more,  linked to the menopause. The number of symptoms and intensity experienced varies from person to person. Symptoms can include hot flushes and night sweats; sleep disturbances; brain fog; low mood or anxiety; vaginal dryness; joint aches; and reduced libido. Some women experience only mild symptoms, others more intense. But the key is, whether the symptoms are interfering with your life. At Jaya Life we help you recognise what may be hormone‑related and map out a holistic plan.

  • In most cases, no. The British Menopause Society says that for women aged 45 and over presenting with menopausal symptoms, diagnosis should be based on the symptoms alone, and that blood tests are not needed unless there’s uncertainty or other concerns.

At Jaya Life we focus first on your story and symptoms, and only arrange testing when necessary, so you don’t waste time or money on unnecessary investigations.

  • HRT means replacing the declining hormones, especially oestrogen and progesterone, that occur in menopause. For many women the benefits of HRT, including symptom relief, bone and heart protection, outweigh the risks when used appropriately.

We provide evidence‑based, individualised care, discussing the benefits and risks with you. Our aim is to help you make an informed choice that supports your short‑ and long‑term health.

  • Yes. At Jaya Life we believe in partnership. Every consultation includes a written summary and care plan you can share with your NHS GP, or other clinicians.

We work as part of your healthcare team to ensure continuity, so your long‑term health is coordinated and seamless.

  • If you have stopped having periods for 12 months, you are in menopause and natural fertility ends. However, if you are in perimenopause or have a condition like premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), fertility may still be possible and we can refer you for specialist fertility advice.

At Jaya Life we help you understand your fertility status, options, and plan for the future you want, whether that includes children or not.

  • When ovarian hormones fall, there are longer‑term implications such as osteoporosis, heart disease and cognitive changes.

That’s why at Jaya Life we combine symptom relief and long‑term health planning, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, mental wellbeing, and hormone care, so you thrive now and, in the years, ahead.

  • Yes, in some cases. If oestrogen is optimised but low sexual desire or energy persist, testosterone supplementation may be considered. At Jaya Life we consider this carefully, after full assessment and in line with guidance. We provide safe, monitored use as part of your wider hormonal health plan.

  • If your ovaries are removed surgically, you may face more abrupt hormone loss, meaning symptoms can be stronger and long‑term health protection becomes even more important.

In such cases, the British Menopause Society recommends considering HRT until at least the average age of menopause. At Jaya Life we specialise in this, offering specialist assessment, tailored hormone therapy, and full wellbeing support.

  • Jaya Life is led by Dr Lucy Mather, a women’s health and British Menopause Society specialist, who brings 20 years of GP experience. We prioritise holistic, empowered care, not just symptom relief but long‑term health.

Our Consultations give you time and depth, unlike rushed standard appointments and your care plan is clear, shared, and forward‑facing - for the woman you are now and who you want to be in five, ten, or twenty years. We offer in‑clinic sessions near Caernarfon (North Wales) or online across the UK, for flexible access.
