POI, early or surgical menopause
When menopause comes early
For some women, menopause happens much sooner than expected.
This might be because the ovaries have stopped working naturally before the age of 40, known as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), or because of surgery that removes the ovaries, leading to surgical menopause.
Whatever the cause, the sudden change in hormone levels can bring both physical and emotional challenges. At Jaya Life, we understand the impact of this and we’re here to help you make sense of what’s happening, regain balance, and look after your long-term health.
Recognising the symptoms
When oestrogen levels fall, whether gradually or suddenly, you may notice a range of changes such as:
Hot flushes and night sweats
Brain fog, poor focus or memory lapses
Low energy or ongoing fatigue
Sleep difficulties
Changes in mood or increased anxiety
Vaginal dryness or discomfort
Reduced libido
Irregular or stopped periods (in POI)
Joint or muscle aches
Palpitations
In surgical menopause, these symptoms can arrive quite suddenly after surgery, often feeling stronger or more disruptive. This is why specialist care and early support make such a difference.
Why specialist care matters
Losing oestrogen earlier in life doesn’t just cause immediate symptoms, it can also have longer-term effects on bone strength, heart health, cognitive wellbeing, and emotional resilience.
That’s why the British Menopause Society (BMS) and NICE recommend that most women with POI or surgical menopause consider hormone replacement therapy (HRT), unless there’s a medical reason not to.
Replacing the hormones your body no longer produces helps protect your future health and can bring significant relief from symptoms.
At Jaya Life, we combine evidence-based medical guidance with compassionate, holistic care, helping you feel well today while protecting your health for tomorrow.
